A Charles II silver tankard

probably John Crutall, London

1678


with domed cover, recumbent lion thumbpiece, the scroll handle, pierce with fleur-de lis, body chased with acanthus leaves and engraved with the arms of Knatchbull, the underside stipple initialled OHE, fully marked

18.5cm. high 

923gr, 29oz 14dwt

Probably acquired by Sir Norton, 1st Bt. (1602-1684) or his son, Sir John, 2nd Bt. (1636-1696)

The arms are those of Knatchbull, baronets of Mersham Hatch, Kent, probably for Sir Norton Knatchbull, 1st Bt.
