36,3 x 26,7 cm ; 14¼ by 10½ in.

This composition was revisited by many Venetian artists of the eighteenth century, but the present painting brings to mind the version by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696-1770), in the church of Sant’Alvise in Venice. Although the treatment differs, being in some ways closer to that of Giovanni Domenico (1727-1804) than to that of his father, this may also have something to do with the technique, since this composition is on paper. This may be a preliminary sketch: there are strong similarities in the figure in the foreground with his back to the viewer, the general sense of movement, the position of Christ, and especially the treatment of light defining the musculature.
