Rafael Zabaleta trained at the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid and was a friend of the celebrated painter and avant-garde critic Burgos Modesto Ciruelos (1908-2002). He is well known today thanks to the museum devoted to his work in the town of his birth, Quesada. His powerful art was chosen to represent Spain in the 30th Biennale and it is this power above all that differentiates him from his contemporaries, in distinctive works such as this fascinating Ravin au loup (Barranco del Lobo).

In a fierce mountain landscape, where large boulders are scattered among the pines and wild plants, Rafael Zabaleta confronts the viewer with a savage animal in the foreground. Its presence gives its name to the natural landscape of Quesafa that the artist knew so well. The sky is reduced to a sliver in order to focus on this singular landscape. All the various characteristics of the terrain are evoked with pictorial solutions expressing different textures. The whole is brought together with strong draughtsmanship and constructed with a focus on large masses, simplified for legibility, with areas of light and shadow standing out clearly. The strong but subtle palette extends over the canvas in a thick impasto, sometimes juxtaposing and superimposing different chromatic tones to emphasize the multiplicity of contrasts. In this landscape, Zabaleta uses all the pictorial means available to give his subject coherence.

Formé à l' École supérieure des beaux-arts de San Fernando à Madrid, ami du célèbre peintre et critique avant-gardiste Burgos Modesto Ciruelos (1908-2002), Rafael Zabaleta est un peintre dont l’œuvre est bien connue aujourd’hui notamment grâce au musée qui lui est consacré dans sa ville natale, Quesada. Son art puissant lui permet notamment de représenter l’Espagne à la XXXe Biennale et surtout de se distinguer de ses contemporains grâce à des œuvres singulières comme notre fascinant Ravin au loup (Barranco del Lobo).

Au centre d'un paysage de montagne farouche, où de grosses pierres alternent avec des pins et des plantes sauvages, Rafael Zabaleta nous présente un animal féroce au premier plan. Sa présence donne son nom au paysage naturel de Quesafa que l’artiste connaît bien. Le ciel est réduit à son minimum pour rendre compte du paysage singulier de cet endroit. Chacune des caractéristiques du terrain est indiquée par des solutions picturales aux différentes textures. L'ensemble est résolu par un dessin fort et construit s’appuyant sur de grandes masses, avec une simplification qui permet une grande lisibilité et qui laisse apparaître très clairement les zones d’ombre et de lumière. Une couleur puissante et en même temps très nuancée s'étale sur la toile en une pâte dense, juxtaposant et superposant parfois différents tons chromatiques pour signifier la multiplicité des contrastes. Zabaleta met dans ce paysage tous les moyens picturaux en œuvre pour donner à comprendre son sujet.
