Her beauty undimmed by either time or age, [Madame de Rohan] remains as fine a flower as she was in her first youth’. Thus was she described by Brantôme (P. Brantôme, Recueil des dames. Poésies et tombeaux, Paris, 1991, p. 605, our translation). The famed beauty of the model for this painting no doubt explains her popularity with the artists of her time.


Jean Clouet (1480-1541) was the first to paint a portrait of the young woman, when she was about twenty years old: there is a version in the Gallerie degli Uffizi in Florence (inv. 14911 F.). Corneille de Lyon (1500-1575) subsequently painted her in 1540 (oil on panel, 17.7 x 14.8 cm, Berlin, Gemäldegalerie, inv. 2165). Finally there are two known portraits by François Clouet: a first drawing dated circa 1540 is based on his father’s work (Musée Condé, Chantilly, inv. MN 221), and a second that Alexandra Zvereva has dated to circa 1558 (Musée Condé, Chantilly, inv. MN 222). Here Jacqueline de Rohan already displays the signs of widowhood – a black dress and the headdress known as an attifet – that also feature in the present painting.


Born in 1520, Jacqueline de Rohan married François d’Orléans, Marquis de Rothelin and Comte de Neuchâtel (1513-1548) when she was sixteen years old and was widowed when she was only twenty-eight. Here, however, she seems slightly older than in the drawings. Alexandra Zvereva suggests that the present portrait dates to 1563: it could have been painted when Jacqueline de Rohan was in Paris for her son’s marriage.


With its remarkably fine draughtsmanship, the present work is close to the oeuvre of François Clouet. Painted with a sure hand, the underlying drawing shows through in places, evidence of the artist’s quest for precision. The subtle and meticulous brushstroke seeks to capture the model’s delicate features, in a skilfully framed composition that gives prominence to her exquisite face. There is a copy of the painting in Rouen (Musée des Beaux-Arts, inv. 1907.1.111).

Poésies et tombeaux, Paris, 1991, p. 605). La beauté renommée de notre modèle explique sans doute l’intérêt qu’elle suscita auprès des artistes de son temps.


Jean Clouet (1480-1541) exécute le premier un portrait de la jeune femme, alors âgée d’une vingtaine d’années, dont une version est conservée au Musée des Offices à Florence (inv. 14911 F.) ; Corneille de Lyon (1500-1575) à son tour la représente en 1540 (huile sur panneau, 17,7 x 14,8 cm, Berlin, Gemäldegalerie, inv. 2165). Enfin, deux portraits par François Clouet nous sont connus : un premier dessin daté vers 1540 reprend celui de son père (Musée Condé, Chantilly, inv. MN 221), et un second qu’Alexandra Zvereva date d’environ 1558 (Musée Condé, Chantilly, inv. MN 222) ; Jacqueline de Rohan y porte déjà les marques du veuvage, également visibles dans le présent tableau : elle porte une robe noire et est coiffée de l’attifet.


Née en 1520, Jacqueline de Rohan épouse François d’Orléans, marquis de Rothelin, comte de Neuchâtel (1513-1548) lorsqu’elle a seize ans, et devient veuve à seulement vingt-huit ans. Elle semble toutefois ici légèrement plus âgée que dans les dessins. Alexandra Zvereva suggère que le présent portrait date de 1563 : il aurait en effet pu être réalisé lors du passage de Jacqueline de Rohan à Paris pour le mariage de son fils.


Par la finesse remarquable de son dessin, notre œuvre se rapproche de la production de François Clouet. Exécutée d’une main sûre, elle laisse apparaître par endroits le dessin sous-jacent, témoignant de la recherche de précision de l’artiste. Le pinceau fin et minutieux s’attache à rendre les traits délicats de son modèle dans une composition habilement cadrée mettant en valeur son précieux visage. Il fit d’ailleurs l’objet d’une copie, aujourd’hui conservée à Rouen (Musée des Beaux-Arts, inv. 1907.1.111).
