Description

A Flemish Tapestry Portrait of Anne of Austria, After Peter Paul Rubens, Late 17th/ 18th century

silk and silver thread

39 3/4 by 37 1/2 in.; 101 by 95.3cm.

Anne of Austria (1601-1666) was the daughter of King Philip III of Spain and the wife of King Louis XIII of France, and she served as the regent of France upon her husband's death. The present tapestry is after a portrait of the monarch that was painted by Peter Paul Rubens between 1621 and 1625. While the original portrait has since been lost, it is known through copies in the collection of the Musée du Louvre and the Rijksmuseum.
