The Panama Railroad: A Victorian Silver Presentation Jug, John Wilmin Figg, London, 1855
on a wide gadrooned base, the cylindrical body elaborately chased with vignettes depicting the construction of the railroad on each side with laborers and railcars that read “Specie US Mails,” the central scene depicting the completed track with train in motion passing a farm, all set in a lush landscape with rocky terrain, trees, and ships in the background, the short spout terminating in a Bacchic mask, with two additional masks to each side set in quatrefoils on matted ground, the flat-topped domed cover surmounted by a lion rampant thumbpiece holding openwork reverse monogram HC over inscription that reads Presented to Hen. Chauncey Esq. by his friend Edwin Bartlett 29 Jan 1855
