Fish Quay, A Flemish Teniers tapestry, Brussels, workshop of Jan Frans van der Borght, third quarter 18th century

woven with figures at the quayside, within a four-sided frame pattern border, woven with Brussels BB town ark and weaver's initials, F.V.D.BORGHT

approximately 301cm high, 318cm wide

Overall measurements: 313cm across the top, 318cm across the bottom, 301cm along left side, 301cm along right side.

Tapestry is lined with linen on reverse. With old strip of Velcro across the top for hanging purposes. Borders have been cut and joined. Sections of darker original frame pattern border in areas. The inner band between borders and tapestry is later. Colours are evenly faded across the tapestry. Some minor areas of dark discolouration in the sky. Some loss of threads in the light areas, and some areas have been restored with consolidation threads, see for example the light coloured sails in centre. It is not unusual for the light colours to deteriorate over time.

Balanced composition and colour overall. Attractive tapestry from well known and very popular series. This is a signed tapestry, and they are not always. Appealing and decorative subject matter. Good sized tapestry.
