Description
[Apollo 1]
Embroidered Prototype Name Patches and Astronaut Photographs
Two Apollo 1 prototype embroidered name patches, black background with white lettering and outer trim, each 2 x 51/4 in. One for Senior Pilot "E.H. White II" and one for Pilot "R.B. Chaffee". Accompanying black & white photographs, one of each astronaut in their spacesuit (no helmet), each measure 8 x 10 in.
Apollo 1 was the only mission to use these embroidered name patches. After the tragedy that took the lives of all three crew members, NASA developed beta cloth, a fireproof material that was used for subsequent spacesuits and astronaut garments.
