The double-gourd is a popular motif in the decorative arts of China. It symbolises fertility and good fortune; moreover, a vessel in the shape of a double-gourd is considered auspicious because it is believed to absorb evil vapors of the universe.

Another green jadeite double-gourd snuff bottle is illustrated in Chang Lin-sheng, Snuff Bottles in the Collection of the National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1991, p. 189, fig. 226. The present bottle is visually stunning for its voluptuous form and its striking combination of colors.
