Description

A parcel-gilt silver and niello box, Ivan Zhilin, Veliky Ustyug, circa 1800

The lid nielloed with a harbourside view, the base with a barn and initials 'NSh' in Cyrillic within dotted diaper pattern, the interior of the lid with later engraved inscription 'The gift of Harry Chester Goodhart,/ to/ Gerald Loder,/ 25th October 1890'

diameter 9cm, 3 1/2 in.

The benefactor named in the inscription, Harry Chester Goodhart (1858-1895), was an English amateur footballer who played for Old Etonians, winning two FA World Cups in 1879 and 1882. The recipient, Gerald Loder (1861-1936), was a barrister who was serving as Conservative Member of Parliament for Brighton in 1890 when he was gifted the box by Goodhart for his 29th birthday. Loder was raised to the peerage as Baron Wakehurst in 1934.  It is likely the two became friendly at Eton or Cambridge, where both were educated.
