A Fabergé jewelled gold and purpurin model of a hen, St Petersburg, circa 1900


realistically carved in purpurin, the eyes set with demantoid garnets, the legs made of gold

height 4.5cm; 1¾in.

A nearly identical Fabergé purpurin model of a hen with demantoid garnet-set eyes and gold legs was commissioned by King King Edward VII in 1907 as part of the Sandringham animals and now forms part of the Royal Collection (RCIN 40007).  For more, please see C. de Guitaut, Fabergé’s Animals, A Royal Farm in Miniature, London, 2010, p. 87.
