The Bay of Naples with Capri

signed in Cyrillic and dated 1891 l.r.

oil on canvas

Canvas: 25.5 by 41cm, 10 by 16 in.

Framed: 38.5 by 53.5cm, 15 by 21 in.

The present work is included in the numbered archive of the artist's work compiled by Gianni Caffiero and Ivan Samarine.

The following condition report is provided by Hamish Dewar who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:

Structural Condition

The canvas is unlined and is securely attached to what certainly appears to be the artist's original, four member, keyed wooden stretcher. The tacking and turnover edges have been reinforced with a strip-lining. This is ensuring a stable structural support. There are vestiges of red wax seals on the reverse of the canvas.

Paint Surface

The paint surface has an even varnish layer. The paint surface displays an overall pattern of raised craquelure. This is stable. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows minor retouchings in the upper right, lower right and lower left corners and a few intermittent spots of inpainting above the lower edge. It should be noted that these retouchings are all of minimal size.

Summary

The painting would therefore appear to be in very good and stable condition.
