Nude

signed with initials in Latin l.r.; further titled in Latin, inscribed Odessa and bearing the date 1902 on the reverse

oil on canvas

Canvas: 71.5 by 96cm, 28 by 37 ¾ in.

Framed: 91 by 115.5cm, 35 ¾ by 45 ½ in.

The following condition report is provided by Hamish Dewar who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:

Structural Condition

The coarse weave canvas is unlined and is securely attached to a relatively modern, keyed wooden stretcher with one central vertical cross member. This is ensuring a stable structural support. Three horizontal bands of red ticking are visible on the reverse of the canvas. An inscription is visible on the reverse in the lower left.

Paint Surface

The paint surface has a dry, chalky appearance with minimal varnish. The paint surface displays an overall pattern of slightly raised fine lines of craquelure. This appears stable. There are numerous scattered minor paint losses and spots of wear, including two areas within the floral wall in the upper left quadrant and running intermittently along the lower edge.

Inspection under ultraviolet light shows scattered carefully applied retouchings, including:

1) intermittent retouchings on and close to the extreme edges of the composition,

2) a vertical retouching with associated spots within the figure's head,

3) minor spots of retouchings following the profile of the figure including her chest,

4) an area of retouchings within the sheets in the lower right quadrant, and

5) other very small scattered spots of retouching including within the background in the upper right.

Summary

The painting would therefore appear to be in essentially good condition.
