La Misère

signed in Latin l.l.

oil on canvas

Canvas: 92 by 73cm, 36 ¼ by 28 ¾ in.

Framed: 112 by 94cm, 44 by 37 in.

Executed in 1928

The following condition report is provided by Hamish Dewar who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:

Structural Condition

The canvas is lined and is securely attached to what certainly appears to be the artist's original fixed wooden keyed wooden stretcher with one central horizontal cross member. This is ensuring an even and stable structural support. An additional linen loose lining is attached to the stretcher.

Paint Surface

The paint surface has an even varnish layer. The paint surface displays an overall pattern of craquelure which is slightly raised in places. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows a number of small intermittent retouchings close to the lower part of the left edge, two minor retouchings either side of the Mother's right forearm, two minor retouchings to the left of the child's dress in the lower left quadrant, and a few minor retouchings towards the the upper part of the right edge.

Summary

The painting would therefore appear to be in good and stable condition.
