Still Life with Apples

signed with initials and dated 1912 l.r.

oil on canvas

Canvas: 50.5 by 65.5cm, 19¾ by 25½in.

Framed: 68 by 83cm, 26¾ by 32¾in.

The following condition report is provided by Hamish Dewar who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:

Structural condition

The canvas is unlined and is securely attached to what is evidently the original keyed wooden stretcher. The overall structural condition is very good. There are faint but stable stretcher-bar lines which are almost inevitable on an unlined canvas of this period.

Paint surface

The paint surface has an even varnish layer. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows only very small retouchings, including an intermittent diagonal line, covering a scratch, in the background to the right of the still life, and a very small diagonal line in the lower left of the green apple in the lower left of the still-life. There are other tiny spots of retouching and it should be stressed that these are of minimal size.

Summary

The painting is therefore in very good and stable condition having been minimally treated in the past and no further work is required.
