Maria Matavtina Reclining (Portrait of Madame M)

signed in Latin, inscribed Paris and dated 1892 l.r.

oil on canvas

Canvas: 119.5 by 195.5cm, 47 by 77in.

Framed: 132.5 by 208.5cm, 52¼ by 82in.

The canvas has been lined. The dress, right arm and flowers show fine vertical cracks to the paint layer, with minor associated losses. There are surface scratches and minor creases to the lower left corner, and a few flecks of paint loss to the shoe. An area of retouching above the sitter's head is visible to the naked eye and has a different surface texture. The surface is covered in light layer of dirt. Inspection under UV light confirms the presence of a large area of retouching above the sitter's head and to her shoulder. It further reveals a horizontal line of retouching to the background above the cushion, a vertical line of retouching above the inscription in the lower right, inpainting to the aforementioned cracks to her dress and arm, and some retouching elsewhere, mostly along the edges. Framed. Unexamined out of frame.
