Femme à l’éventail noir

signed in Latin l.l.; further bearing a Galerie Hupel label on the stretcher

oil on canvas

Canvas: 60 by 92cm, 23½ by 36¼in.

Framed: 73.5 by 105.5cm, 29 by 41½in.

Executed in the early 1910s

The canvas has been lined and the original tacking edges have been cut. There are surface scratches with associated losses in places: to the blue pigment in the upper right corner, around the sitter's right elbow and elsewhere. There is a vertical line of paint loss 10cm from the left edge. A small paint loss is visible above the right leg and there are further minor losses elsewhere. There is craquelure throughout. Faint stretcher bar marks are running parallel to the edges as well as vertically across the centre. Inspection under UV light reveals minor retouching to the left edge, in places to the stretcher bar marks, mostly along the left, to the blue pigment in the lower left, to the aforementioned line of paint loss, and to the right corners. Framed.
