Each watercolour over pencil, heightened with bodycolour;

each signed lower left: Mackenzie Thomson; inscribed on labels on the reverse of the frames: H.M.S. Royal Sovereign / Flag of Vice Admiral Lord Walter Kerr / 1895; and: HMS Trafalger / Flag of Rear Admiral / Lord Walter Kerr / 1899

The first: 250 by 351 mm.; the second: 253 by 352 mm.

Admiral of the Fleet Lord Walter Talbot Kerr (1839-1927), by 1895 and 1899 respectively;
Thence by descent.
In 1889 Lord Kerr was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral and he became Second-in-Command of the Mediterrancean Fleet. In April 1890 he hoisted his flag in the battleship H.M.S. Trafalgar. In 1895 he was promoted to Vice Admiral and became Commander-in-Chief of the Channel Squadron. He hoisted his flag in the battleship H.M.S. Royal Sovereign. In 1899 he was made First Naval Lord and the following year was promoted to full Admiral. In 1902 he was made a Knight of the Order of the Bath.
