Matthias Withoos's most significant and recognisable works are dark and mysterious landscapes, often populated with a variety of meticulously depicted animals. In the present work, a large bird of prey, his wings wide open in the centre of the composition, chases three ducks in a forest near the dam of a small river. Withoos was clearly concerned with the depiction of atmosphere and light, seen here in the contrast between the dark foliage in the foreground, scattered with small white brush strokes for the flowers, and the pale pinkish light surrounding the distant view of the mountain. During his lifetime, Withoos' works became extremely popular among his contemporaries, fetching high prices on the art market.
