Buys was born in Amsterdam and studied under Cornelis Pronk, Jacob de Wit and Cornelis Troost. He was a painter, draughtsman and designer and was appointed Director of the Amsterdam Art Academy in 1768.

These two designs for book illustrations, theatrically drawn with gesticulating figures in indoor and outdoor settings, demonstrate the extent to which Buys absorbed his teacher Troost's great gift for communicating dramatic narratives.
