Description

Flemish School, 17th Century

Rugged landscape with figures

Point of the brush and brown wash;

bears inscription in pen and brown ink, lower left: van eijck (crossed out)

unframed: 176 by 289 mm

framed: 460 by 550 mm

E. Blum, London (bears his mark, not in Lugt)

The name inscribed on this atmospheric and appealing drawing may well signify an attribution to the Flemish painter of Italianate port scenes, Casper van Eyck (1613-1673), who worked in Antwerp, Brussels, Genoa and Madrid. The tiny handful of drawings attributed to this artist, such as a sheet in the Metropolitan Museum1, do not, however, resemble this drawing very closely in style or subject-matter.
