Moeyaert painted many biblical and mythological scenes.  The present drawing, illustrating Pilate washing his hands, does not appear to relate to any known painting by the artist.  Moeyaert was a wealthy man during his lifetime and had investments in the business of the renowned art dealer, Hendrick van Uylenburgh.   Alongside Jan Vos, he was the Commissioner of the Theatre of Van Campen for many years.  As a draughtsman he was influenced by Rembrandt, from whom he adopted the use of red chalk in his sketches.
