Van Strij was born in Dordrecht in the middle of the 18th century, but his work was inspired by and in the style of the great Dutch landscape masters of preceding generations, notably Aelbert Cuyp (1620-91), Paulus Potter (1625-54), and Meindert Hobbema (1638-1709), from whose work he often borrowed motifs and figures. Van Strij specialised in pastoral subjects, and the present painting is entirely characteristic of his œuvre.
