Bernard Picart was predominantly a draughtsman and printmaker.  He was born in Paris, but spent most of his working career in Holland.  He very quickly became immersed in the flourishing Dutch world of publishing and printmaking, working on many illustrious editorial projects and illustrated luxury editions.  He made numerous designs for illustrations to the Bible, and to the works of Ovid.  Picart's most celebrated work is Cérémonies et Costumes religieuses de tous les peuples du Monde, which was published from 1723 to 1743.
