Jacob Esselens was born in Amsterdam and worked for a period in Kleve.  He also travelled to France and worked in England during the years following the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660.  The architecture in the present sheet, notably the shape of the church tower, suggests that this landscape probably dates from the artist's time in England.
