Van Groenewegen’s activity is first recorded in Rome, from 1615 to 1623, where he became a member of the Bentveughels with the nickname Leeuw (lion). His memories of Italian landscapes and ruins remained a constant feature of his work even when he returned to his native Holland, settling in Delft and later in The Hague.
