François Verwilt studied in Utrecht with Cornelis van Poelenburgh (1594/5-1667) but spent most of his life in Rotterdam. Talented and eclectic, he experimented with many different genres and excelled in figure-filled Italianate landscapes, in which Van Poelenburgh's influence is most apparent. His genre paintings and pastoral landscapes, such as the present work, reveal that he was also sensitive to the Rotterdam school of painting, particularly the tradition of the almost monochrome stable interior, popularised by the brothers Cornelis (1607-81) and Herman Saftleven (1609-85).
