Jan Wildens specialised in landscape painting. From 1613 until 1618 he worked in Rome, and briefly Genoa; in Rome he came strongly under the influence of the great landscape innovator Paul Bril. Following his return to his native Antwerp, Wildens collaborated with a number of artists, including Sir Peter Paul Rubens, providing the landscape backgrounds for their figural compositions.

At the time of the 1992 sale, Dr Wolfgang Adler compared this drawing with another in the British Museum, and suggested a dating of circa 1640.1
