Gerd Arntz (1900-1988) was a key figure in both the 'Young Rhineland' circle of artists in Düsseldorf and the 'Cologne Progressives.'  Primarily working in woodcut and linocut, Arntz created more than 4,000 pictograms for the visual dictionary of the Isotype, a pictorial method of conveying data.  Arntz sat for Sander on at least two occasions before emigrating to The Hague in 1934.
