The subject of the Wolfgang Tillmans work offered here, in art historical terms can arguably be defined as a ‘still life.’ However, by resisting such quick and easy categorisation we can appreciate Tillmans’s desire to empower the viewer ‘to see with the immediacy’ he felt when shooting works like K5. Indeed, we can then recognise the collection of fruit and vegetables balanced on the shelf and radiator as just that. Yet, the monumental size of this work emphasises strongly the beauty and importance of that which is often thought to be ordinary and mundane. Thus, Tillmans is encouraging us to take watch and behold the everyday.
