During his 1721 visit to London, Anton Maria Zanetti the Elder acquired 130 drawings by Parmigianino (1503-1540) from the collection of Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel (1585-1646), and found himself enchanted by the early chiaroscuro woodcuts belonging to William Cavendish, second Duke of Devonshire (1672-1729). Upon his return to Venice, the printmaker set out to perfect the technique himself by creating painterly woodcuts inspired by the Mannerist master's drawings. This atmospheric chiaroscuro woodcut, along with Lot 61, are two of the romantic re-interpretations that would inspire the eighteenth century chiaroscuro woodcut revival.
