The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:
The Madonna and Child with SS. Lawrence and Catherine of Alexandria
Oil on panel, in a period gilt wood frame with some loss.
The soft wood panel has applied repairs to the reverse including a horizontal sliding batten.
Consolidation of a fracture between Lawrence’s and the Madonna’s heads has been carried out, along with the removal of a ‘butterfly’ repair, the outline visible through the paint layer.
The paint layer is stable and secure and in very good preserved condition; the painterly texture through the composition is intact.
Under u-v light very minor pinprick loss can be seen through Christ’s nose and reduction of dark shrinkage craquelure is visible through Catherine’s neck and to her green robe.
The Madonna’s blue robe has had some minor strengthening along with the stone step beneath.
The remains of original gilding is visible through the halos and Lawrence’s robe.
The flesh tones are well preserved and fine details to the faces are intact.
Remnants of an older discoloured varnish can be detected and their removal would improve the overall tonality of the image and reinforce the quality of the tonal and chromatic values.
The painting presents well.
