Fede Galizia

Still life of peaches

Oil on panel, unframed

The soft wood panel is slightly convex; vertical recessed wooden battens have been applied to the reverse to stabilise this.

Slim horizontal recessed inserts have been applied to reinforce a horizontal hairline fracture.

The paint layer is stable and secure and mostly in a good preserved condition.

The paint to the background has been applied using a naturally thin technique, this paint layer has become thinner over the course of time and exposed the warm pale ground and horizontal wood grain. Mitigation of this thinness by the application of restoration can be detected.

There is more evidence of this above the level of the platter than below.

More thinness and associated exposure of the wood grain is visible through the stem and foot of the platter, the shadow of the ledge and the orange blossom.

Recent reduction within these areas can be seen under u-v light, along with reduction of hairline paint loss along the fracture.

The bold brushwork through the composition, particularly noticeable through the peaches, flowers and leaves, is well preserved.

The colours are strong and the modelling intact. Some slight strengthening of the rose’s leaves has taken place as well as a reduction of some thinness through the peaches where exposure of the dark under paint has occurred.

Minor tonal improvement would be gained from the removal of residual varnish.

The painting presents well.
