The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:

Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder

Still life of flowers

Oil on copper, in a modern plain wood and gilt frame in good condition.

The copper panel is in a good flat and preserved condition, with no deformations.

The paint layer is generally well preserved but there is some localised instability with 1-2 recent pin prick losses.

The paint texture present in visible brushstrokes through the tulips, in particular, and the impasted highlights are in good original condition.

There is noticeable thinning of the paint in the background with the pale ground visible. Reduction of this thinness with applied restoration can be detected.

The flowers are well preserved with little recent intervention.

There has been slight loss of 'top note' glazes and scumbling to the flowers leading to a loss of modelling.

Many fine details are intact.

Removal of a degraded and discoloured varnish would significantly improve the tonal values and reveal subtle chromatic nuance.
