The following condition report is provided by Hamish Dewar who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:

Structural Condition

The canvas appears to be unlined with the turnover and tacking edges strengthened with a thin strip lining, onto what I assume is the original keyed wooden stretcher. This is ensuring a sound and stable structural support and has secured the overall pattern of fine lines of drying craquelure, which are inevitable for an unlined canvas of this period. The overall structural condition would appear to be very good.

Paint Surface

The paint surface has a rather matt and uneven varnish layer and would benefit considerably from revarnishing, which would give the paint surface more depth and resonance.

Inspection under ultraviolet light shows only the most minimal sports of inpainting within the still life and equally minimal retouchings within the background.

Summary

The painting would therefore appear to be in very good and stable condition and the only work that might be required is revarnishing. It is very encouraging to note that the fine detail of the composition is very well preserved.
