The present composition derives from an original design by Rogier van der Weyden (circa 1399/1400 - 1464) which found great popularity in the workshops of Bruges and Brussels in the 15th and early 16th centuries. The great popularity of the composition is attested to by versions and derivations being found in the workshops of The Master of the Legend of St Ursula (circa 1436- circa 1505), Gerard David (circa 1450/60-1523), Master of the Legend of St Catherine (active circa 1460- circa 1510), Master of the Magdalen Legend (active 1480-1537), Master of the Embroidered Foliage (active circa 1490-1510), Adriaen van Isenbrant (circa 1485 - 1551), Willem Benson (1521-1574) and Ambrosius Benson (1495-1550) amongst others. The present variant of the composition would appear to be closest to the earlier treatments of the composition by Rogier van Der Weyden and his pupil and collaborator Hans Memling (circa 1430/40-1494).
