A witch preparing the Sabbath

oil on canvas

unframed: 37.6 x 47.3 cm.; 14⅞ x 18⅝ in

framed: 55.5 x 65 cm.; 21⅞ x 25⅝ in.

The canvas is lined and the paint surface is relatively clean with a clear and even varnish. There are faint stretcher marks visible under raking light. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals scattered retouching along the stretcher marks as well as a band of retouching along the lower margin. There are small spots of retouching scattered in the background as well as some more concentrated areas: to a repaired, horizontal damage in the lower left corner (approx. 2 x 15cm.); to a repaired diagonal damage centre right (approx. 5 x 1cm.); a spot in the upper right corner; and around the cauldron and the witch's legs, as well as three small spots in her proper right knee and shin. None of these distract from the legibility of the image which is ready to hang.
