De Man is best known for his portraits and genre scenes, but looked to the example of Hendrik Cornelisz. Van Vliet for the small number of church interiors he also painted. The interior of the New Church in Delft was a subject favoured by a number of church interior painters, including Van Vliet, who in fact depicted the same view (at a slightly different angle) from the northern aisle to the southeast, in a panel today in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin, datable to 1650–75.1
