The Virgin and Child in a landscape

oil on oak panel

unframed: 20.5 x 15.1 cm.; 8 x 6 in.

framed: 26.9 x 21.8 cm.; 10⅝ x 8⅝ in.

Abraham Preyer, Paris and The Hague (as Hans Memling; according to an inscription on the reverse of a photo in the M.J. Friedländer archive).

The design for this composition derives from a drawing of disputed authorship with a false Dürer signature, depicting the Virgin seated at full-length on part of a throne, which has previously been associated with Rogier van der Weyden and his workshop (Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam).1 Prints after the drawing by the brothers Hieronymus and Jan Wierix are also known (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York;2 Royal Library of Belgium, Brussels),3 testifying to the popularity of such an image, and this small devotional panel was most probably produced to fulfil a demand for these kinds of objects on the open market.
