framed: 72.4 x 66 cm.; 28½ x 26 in.
This composition is closely comparable to the Virgin and Child by the Master of the Gold Brocade in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon.1 The same Virgin and Child are seen in reverse in compositions including that by The Master of the Magdalen Legend in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Belgium,2 as well as in some examples on canvas by the Master of Dijon.3 Other examples by the Master of the Gold Brocade include one which sold at Mak van Waay, Amsterdam, 27 February 1923, lot 13; one with Galerie Mestrallet, Paris, 1936; and one which sold at Lempertz, Cologne, 25 November 2000, lot 1180.
