This charming pair of pictures, sketch-like in their execution, are extremely rare examples of still lifes by Pieter Claesz. in a small format. The works are datable to circa 1658, among Claesz.'s last paintings. They each contain elements of the 'breakfast piece' (Banketjestukken), the genre for which Claesz. is most famed, that he combined in seemingly endless inventive compositions.
