Probably William Douglas, 4th Duke of Queensberry (1724–1810); 
By whom bequeathed to Sir John Stepney, Bt. (1743–1811);
By descent to his great-nephew Sir Arthur Cowell-Stepney, Bt (1834–1909), Llanelli, South Wales;
Thence by descent at Greystoke Castle, Penrith, Cumbia.

Based on the self-portrait by Anthony van Dyck today in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, which probably dates from the artist's stay at the English court during the winter of 1620–21.1
