In the collection of the family of the present owner for at least three generations.
Jane Bertie married General Edward Mathew (1729–1805). Their daughter, Anne, married James Austen, brother of the novelist Jane Austen, in circa 1792, and Anne's father is said to have served as inspiration for the character of General Tilney in Northanger Abbey.
