Although the artist of this arresting portrait has not been identified, it was clearly executed by an accomplished painter who was probably working in Parma in the 1530s. The sitter's costume points to this, as does the fact that the artist was evidently looking at Parmigianino (1503-1540), whose influence is clear in details such as the sitter's elongated neck, the twisted pose with his shoulder at different heights, and the expressive nature of his hands.
