Description

Southern German or Austrian, 17th century

Pendant with Miniature Scenes of Saint Francis and the Virgin

partially polychromed bone, set on cloth, within a horn and rock crystal pendant

60mm., 2⅜in.

This remarkable pendant with micro carved scenes is very close to another from the Alsdorf collection in the Art Institute of Chicago (inv. no. 1992.549). Note the similar use of polychromy and the very similarly delineated bridges. The scene with St Francis receiving the Stigmata in the present pendant is both charming and extraordinary.
