All'Antica Bust of a Woman

white marble, veined grey and red Africano(?) marble and bronze, on a green marble socle

63cm., 24¾in.

The marble head of this intriguing bust is likely to represent an example of late 19th-century imitations of ancient sculpture, as discussed in 1899 by Furtwängler (op. cit.) who notes the 'un-antique profiles' and artificial corrosions of female heads of this type. It is possible that the bust's coloured marble and bronze shoulders are of an earlier date and were associated with the head.
