Property from a Distinguished Belgian Private Collection

Hispano-Flemish, early 16th century

Virgin and Child

gilt and polychromed wood

86cm., 33⅞in.

With Jan Dirven, Antwerp;
private collection, Belgium
It is likely that this charming Madonna was carved by a sculptor from Malines, as is indicated by the distinctive appearance of the Child. The estofado decoration is typical of Spanish sculpture from the late 15th century onwards. The close political and artistic relationship between Spain and Flanders during this period resulted in a variety of works of art incorporating both artistic traditions.
