oil on canvas

unframed: 51.9 x 83.3 cm.; 20⅜ x 32¾ in.

framed: 57.8 x 89.8 cm.; 22¾ x 35⅜ in.

The canvas is lined, the paint surface is fairly clean, and the varnish is very slightly discoloured. There are retouchings along all four margins, most notably along the upper margin and in the upper and lower left corners, and there are some small retouchings scattered in the sky. The majority of the work remains untouched, however, and the painting is in overall good condition.

Rev. Hubert A. Holden (according to an inscription on the reverse, beneath the lining);
Private collection, France;
Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 5 December 2013, lot 224 (as after Canaletto, when unlined), where acquired.

A later copy after Canaletto's painting, formerly in the Medici collection at Poggio Imperiale, today in the Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence (inv. no. 1334).1 Canaletto's painting was likely based on a drawing in the Royal Collection, datable to 1755, due to the stage of construction of the Torre dell'Orologio (inv. no. RCIN 907451).2

The present lot is very similar to the painting sold at Sotheby's, New York, 22 May 2019, lot 123.3 Both paintings differ from Canaletto's original composition through the inclusion of an extra bay and arch on the Zecca on the left, as well as more of the houses on the Riva degli Schiavoni on the right. They also both incorporate an additional figure in the form of the woman in blue in the gondola, lower left. Absent from the present work, however, is the figure of a man standing in the prow of the boat holding onto the cask, lower right, which appears in the Sotheby's New York picture (both these figures may be later additions to that painting, which otherwise dates from the 18th century).
