The Property of a Distinguished Collector
Manner of Canaletto, circa 1900
Venice, a view of the Molo from the Bacino di San Marco, with the Zecca and the Palazzo Ducale
oil on canvas
unframed: 51.9 x 83.3 cm.; 20⅜ x 32¾ in.
framed: 57.8 x 89.8 cm.; 22¾ x 35⅜ in.
A later copy after Canaletto's painting, formerly in the Medici collection at Poggio Imperiale, today in the Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence (inv. no. 1334).1 Canaletto's painting was likely based on a drawing in the Royal Collection, datable to 1755, due to the stage of construction of the Torre dell'Orologio (inv. no. RCIN 907451).2
The present lot is very similar to the painting sold at Sotheby's, New York, 22 May 2019, lot 123.3 Both paintings differ from Canaletto's original composition through the inclusion of an extra bay and arch on the Zecca on the left, as well as more of the houses on the Riva degli Schiavoni on the right. They also both incorporate an additional figure in the form of the woman in blue in the gondola, lower left. Absent from the present work, however, is the figure of a man standing in the prow of the boat holding onto the cask, lower right, which appears in the Sotheby's New York picture (both these figures may be later additions to that painting, which otherwise dates from the 18th century).
