Portrait of Martin Luther (1483–1546)


bears the serpent device and date lower left: 1525

oil on paper laid down on oak panel, circular, unframed

unframed diameter: 11.5 cm.; 4½ in.

A later copy after Cranach's roundel portrait of the Reformer, Martin Luther, which is known in a number of versions. The present painting comes closest to the autograph work in the Morgan Library & Museum, New York, which forms a pendant with another roundel depicting Luther's wife, Katharina von Bora, dated 1525, the year of their marriage.1 Other versions are in Basel,2 Wittenberg,3 and Nördlingen.4
