The canvas is lined and the paint surface is clean with a clear and even varnish. There are stretcher marks faintly visible along all four edges and the network of craquelure has become slightly more distinct in the lower half of the composition. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals very little intervention - just some tiny, pin prick retouchings in the sitter’s face and some fine lines to the craquelure in his red waistcoat and some small spots in the background. In overall good condition.
